Christmas in July Celebration
WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Beneath clear blue skies and picture-perfect summer weather, the grounds of Veterans Haven South were filled with gratitude, laughter, and the unmistakable spirit of Christmas despite the calendar reading July.
The Christmas in July celebration, hosted by the Pine Barren Venom Jeep Club, Venom Elves & Friends, and proudly sponsored by Mission BBQ of Sicklerville, New Jersey, brought together volunteers, donors, and community members for one shared purpose: honoring the men and women who once answered the nation’s call to serve.
For a few hours, the focus wasn’t on the past. Instead, it was on ensuring the veterans who now call Veterans Haven South home knew they remain appreciated by the community they helped protect.
A Community Effort Months in the Making!
While visitors experienced an afternoon filled with smiles, conversation, gifts, and a freshly prepared barbecue lunch, the event itself was the culmination of months of planning and incredible community support.
Club members answered the call by purchasing and donating items from the Veterans Haven South wish list. Those generous contributions ensured every resident received a thoughtfully assembled gift bag.
Local families and supporters also spent countless hours baking hundreds of homemade cookies. Each cookie added a personal touch that could never be purchased in a store.
Behind the scenes, volunteers formed an assembly line to organize, sort, and pack the donations into individual care packages. Hundreds of donated items were transformed into gifts that reflected the appreciation of an entire community.
Kathedral Event Center Opens Its Doors
Much of the work happened long before event day.
Kathedral Event Center in Hammonton generously opened its beautifully facilitie’s basement to the volunteers. The facility became the perfect location to efficiently organize and assemble the veterans’ gift bags.
Dozens of volunteers worked side by side, filling bags with donated necessities and homemade treats. Organizers credited Kathedral Event Center’s generosity as one of the key reasons the packing effort ran so smoothly.
Mission BBQ Serves More Than Great Food
The celebration was made even more memorable through the support of Mission BBQ of Sicklerville, whose team prepared and served lunch to the residents, staff, and volunteers.
Mission BBQ has earned a national reputation for more than authentic American barbecue. Since opening in 2011, the company has made supporting military members, veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders a central part of its mission. Through charitable giving, community partnerships, and acts of service across the country, the company has become well known for honoring those who serve.
Saturday’s event reflected those values.
The meal was appreciated by everyone in attendance. However, it was Mission BBQ’s willingness to invest its time, people, and resources that truly stood out. Organizers expressed hope that the collaboration marks the beginning of a long and meaningful partnership dedicated to serving veterans throughout South Jersey.
Moments That Touched the Heart
While the gifts and food were appreciated, it was the conversations that left the greatest impact.
One veteran shared that the day felt like spending time with family.
After taking a bite of one of the homemade cookies, the veteran smiled and said it reminded them of the cookies their mother used to bake. It was a simple moment that perfectly captured the comfort and warmth the volunteers hoped to provide.
Another attendee reflected on the impact of the event, saying:
“This was absolutely incredible. It makes me proud to be part of a club that doesn’t just talk about helping the community. It genuinely gets involved and makes a difference.”
Club members were equally moved by the day.
“This event is truly one of our favorites. It hits home and makes us proud to give back,” one member said.
Another volunteer added,
“I have to say our club has been nothing short of amazing. I’m so glad to be a small part of this.”
Gratitude Without a Season
As Christmas in July came to a close, organizers reflected on the remarkable number of people who made the day possible.
Every donor who purchased an item from the Veterans Haven South wish list played a role.
Every baker who filled kitchens with the aroma of fresh cookies made someone smile.
Every volunteer who packed gift bags, unloaded supplies, greeted residents, and served with a smile helped create lasting memories.
Kathedral Event Center provided the space that made weeks of preparation possible.
Mission BBQ provided more than a meal. The company demonstrated the same spirit of service that has become its trademark across the nation.
Together, they reminded the veterans of Veterans Haven South that their sacrifices continue to be recognized, appreciated, and remembered.
The event served as another powerful example of what can happen when an entire community comes together with one purpose: giving back to the men and women who have already given so much.
